I’m a huge fan of anything that helps newborn babes adjust to this frentical, florescent world of ours.
My latest discovery, I’m happy to announce, does just that. Soothing, tinkly and lovely to look at (and to wear), I’m talking about a Mexican Bola.
What’s a Mexican Bola?
It’s a pendant that dangles on a long chain and rests on a pregnant mama’s belly. A little xylaphone inside the pendant makes a chiming sound as the mother moves – ting ting, ting ting.
The mechanics of the bola revolve around the premise that soothing music can have a positive effect on a babe in utero. Apparently, from about 20 weeks, a developing foetus can ‘hear’ the calming chimes of a Mexican Bola and grow familiar with its gentle melody.
After the birth, little ones are said to be pacified by the comforting chiming sound they’ve come to know, calming them and helping them to relax.
These Mexican Bolas make excellent baby shower gifts. Check out From Womb to World for a v. pretty range of Mexican Bolas, as well as prices and stockists.
