Friends, allow me to introduce you to Candice Brophy, the brains behind Milk Deco – an award-winning furniture design and manufacturing business that does its best to create ‘green’ designs that are environmentally friendly.
Candice is no ordinary mom (not that any mom is ordinary!). No siree! She’s a mom that dons many hats.
Candice studied architecture at Wits University and although she wasn’t able to complete her final year because she fell pregnant with her daughter, her keen sense of proportion and eye for detail motivated her to start designing furniture.
Today Milk Deco extends its fresh approach to nursery accessories and top-quality linen. Candice designs contemporary homes and does the odd renovation from time to time, too. Yup, she’s one busy lady!
I managed to snatch a few minutes from Candice’s demanding schedule to ask her a handful of questions…
Sprogs n’ Dogs: What makes Milk Deco furniture unique?
Candice: Milk Deco is custom-made, eco-friendly, contemporary baby and toddler furniture. We try to design interesting pieces that save space, prevent clutter and that children and parents can enjoy.
Sprogs n’ Dogs: Which two pieces are your favourite and why?
Candice: I love the Nobee Eco resin cot (right) and the Soho Wallpaper cot (below) because they are so different and make quite a statement!
Sprogs n’ Dogs: Why did you begin designing furniture?
Candice: Firstly it’s my passion and I saw a gap in the market as there isn’t any customizable eco-friendly baby furniture around. I personally looked for something different when my daughter was born and battled to find anything. I see the same cots and linen sets still available five years later… time for some change I say!
Sprogs n’ Dogs: Do you think your background in architecture has informed your designs?
Candice: Studying architecture and then being in the industry certainly makes designing furniture easy as you have an understanding of material sizes, comfortable dimensions, proportion and general good design.
Sprogs n’ Dogs: Besides striking nursery furniture what else does Milk Deco offer?
Candice: Milk Deco offers nursery design where we will design wall stickers, canvas art, felt mobiles, cushions and 300 thread count linen to match a theme for a client. We help with colour pallets and room layout to maximize space and storage. We also do toddler beds and linen in single, ¾ and double.

Candice: Most of our prices are on our website, www.milkdeco.co.za. Alternatively, people can send me an email requesting a price list and I will email one back. We also have a Facebook fan page that has a lot of our products and décor.
