Anyone who has two kids knows all about sibling rivalry. My two tots’ resolute inability to share can be mind blowing at times. Instead of referee the scrap over who gets to draw on their (smallish) store-bought blackboard I decided to take matters into my own hands, literally.
Four steps to fun
What you need:
- 1.2m x 0.9m shutter board
- 1 litre pink wood primer
- 1 litre black undercoat
- 1 litre chalkboard/ blackboard paint
STEP ONE: Paint shutter board on both sides (to prevent warping) with primer and black undercoat.
STEP TWO: Rope in some eager help.
STEP THREE: Mix up the blackboard paint and apply in even brush strokes. Leave for a few hours to dry.
STEP FOUR: Usher in budding artists and watch the colourful story unfold!
The beauty of this blackboard is that it’s big enough for two or three kids to share, yet small enough to move around from place to place – indoors when it rains and outside when the sun doth shine.
Happily it’s brought hours of fun to our patio.

Great idea.. where can I get chalkboard paint from?
I know Plascon make it. You can try and get hold of some at Builder’s Warehouse, or if you’re in Cape Town, Penny Pinchers (your local handyman should also stock it)
