Toddlers and Pet Food

I read this piece written by Sarah Rae Trover on ohdeedoh (a great site dedicated to home, design and kids) and I had to share it. It’s true, in many a home, a dog’s food really is not his own…

“As long as people have had indoor animals, it’s been a back and forth battle between toddlers and the pet food bowl. For whatever reason, it’s the most magical, mythical place and a day’s work isn’t complete in the world of a 2 year old unless the whole bowl has been emptied and examined piece by piece.

Mmm yummy!

Many people simply remove the challenge by feeding their pets at scheduled times throughout the day, leaving the bowls empty or off the floor during the other hours. We’ve known some cat owners to leave food and water out on countertops so little fingers can’t snack on any Meow Mix when they get bored, but giving your cat a buffet in the middle of your work space can be tricky.”

What happens in your house? Have you got a cunning trick that keeps little fingers out of the pet pellets?

haha, very funny, very true. In fact, it never ceased to amaze me when my kids were toddling that they’d reject the codon bleu meal I’d prepared, only to nibble on pellets and all manner of gross things. Must be some primal instinct thing. Also, who’s noticed that if toddlers aren’t eating the pellets, then they’re throwing them around the floor (apparently the rules are: no piece of tile must be allowed to show.?!?!?!? ) p.s. the only way to keep the toddler at bay, is to teach the dog to GUARD his bowl!.
